AIO Alum Elizabeth Bentley in French Polynesia

After graduating from Northeastern University in 2008 I began working for the Three Seas Program as the Diving Supervisor in Nahant, MA, Moorea, French Polynesia and Catalina Island, CA.  Catalina Island is my favorite diving spot anywhere.  Its kelp forests are so rich in life and diving through the kelp is like flying through a forest!  After working for Three Seas I worked as a SCUBA Instructor at Catalina Island Marine Institute where I was able to soak up all of the kelp forest diving I could get. In addition I spent a few months working at Friday Harbor Labs on San Juan Island, WA with two of my professors from the Three Seas.  After moving around so much I was eager to find a more permanent job, which is what brought me to San Diego!

I'm currently working as a Researcher for the University of California, Santa Barbara SONGS Mitigation Project. The project monitors an artificial reef created to mitigate the effects of the San Onofre nuclear plant. We look at various aspects of the reef, including fish and invertebrate densities to assess its health. I just finished up my first field season with the project.  It was a lot of work, a lot of diving and a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to the next summer of diving and research in the kelp!!
